Heguy Claims Six Goal Haul In 8-7 Silver Cup Triumph

The nine-goal polo star, Nachi Heguy, proved a key player in his team’s spirited fight back against Mahra Polo in the Dubai Silver Cup today (Wednesday)  scoring six goals as Zedan Polo recorded a much-needed 8-7 winning score.  Zedan now face unbeaten rivals, Ghantoot on Friday in the final game of the qualification stages before the semi-finals begin on Tuesday. At one point during the four chukker match Zedan were trailing Mahra by 4-1, but Heguy, the highest handicapper in the tournament and a four-time winner of the esteemed Argentine Open tournament in Buenos Aires, proved impossible for his opposition to subdue.  Zedan were fighting against the odds after losing their four goal handicapper, Rodolfo Ducos, to a niggling knee injury which was aggravated during his side’s 8-7 defeat at the hands of reigning Dubai Gold Cup champions, Habtoor Polo earlier in the week. The side, which was founded by Saudi Arabian patron, Amr Zedan, two years ago,  is also contesting its first competitive tournament of the season.  “I recently had a knee operation and after the opening game I was in some pain so I didn’t want to risk it and I decided to sit this one out,” said Ducos, whose place in the team was taken by Matian Mathado. “I think it was the right decision. It was a very physical and tough match and we are very pleased to have come out on top.”  Also getting their names on the score sheet for Zedan were Mathado and Mathias Logioco who sealed the 8-7 victory for his team by nailing the final goal just before the end of the fourth chukker when the scores were level at 7-7.

“We have done very well to maintain the pressure on Mahra Polo,” said Amr Zedan. “We are getting into our stride and seem to be clicking well as a team.  “Interestingly we lost our opening match by the same score [8-7] that we just won by, but I think that most games in this tournament will be very close.  “All the teams are very skillful and the margins between winning and losing are very small. It was a very spirited and physical match. Now we must prepare for our next game against Ghantoot on Friday.”  The Dubai Silver Cup is part of the Dubai Gold Cup series which takes place annually at Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club.
